Q
Why do the cells have a life expectancy? What material are they made of?
A
Most plastic made horticulture/gardening products will have some type life expectancy information due to breakdown of the materials over time and normal exposure to the elements. Per a previously answered question posted to the product page, "the black Cone-tainers are constructed with recycled polystyrene while the white Cone-tainers are constructed with low-density polyethylene."
Q
How long can I leave my tree seedlings in these pots before transplanting to a larger one or planting in the ground?
A
Our master gardener suggests removal of your tree seedlings once you begin to notice root development growing from the bottom of the Cone-tainers and before the roots begin to circle.
Q
what is the best way to remove oak tree seedlings from the Cone-tainers without damaging the roots?
A
Our master gardener stated that he normally allows the soil to become somewhat dry and then loosens the soil around the edges of the Cone-tainer with a thin, blunt object before gently removing the growing plants.
Q
Is a bottom tray typically used to keep the cone-tainers watered, like how regular square or round pots sit in a 1020 tray and can absorb water from the tray? I find that my seedings dry out quickly as they get larger due to the small amount of soil and the cone-tainers would need to be in about an inch of water using the cone-tainer tray for water to be reachable by roots at the bottom of the cone-tainer.
A
The SC10 Cone-tainers can be used with a 1020 tray for bottom watering purposes, however, based on the length of the two trays, one of the 98 cell Cone-tainer tray rows will not fit inside of the 1020 Tray when the entire tray has been filled. The SC7 Cone-tainers cannot be bottom watered using the 1020 Trays.

Rapid Plant Growth With These
Mar 10, 2017 | By Teddy
The best method I have found is to germinate the pepper and tomato seeds in a ziploc bag and then plant them in the ConeTainers. I'm using the 8.25" size & yes the roots grow straight down, fast!. Growth in these tubes is phenomenal, far better than any other method I have tried. I'm potting up from these to the deepots.

The cones have vertical ribs that prevent roots from circling. 98 of them are very compact in the tray. Seem very sturdy. Can't wait to start propagating raspberries, forsythia, and various native trees and shrubs.

This stand is very heavy duty and should stand up to use and abuse for many years. It's bigger than a standard 1020 tray, so I'll have to figure out something else to put underneath to catch water runoff when watering.

As soon as I saw your product on line, I knew it
was just what I needed. The seedlings I cultivated
needed space for an 8-10"
tap root. Conventional pots were not deep enough.
I currently have 180 potted. Your product is
great. The rack makes for good compact growing
area. Thanks for a fine
product.
