How do I size my fan and shutters system?

  1. The first thing that you need to determine is the amount of air required. This is stated in CFM (Cubic Feet of Air per Minute).
  2. Use the following formula to determine the CFM required for your greenhouse: CFM = Length x Width x 12 Example: Greenhouse 12' wide and 24' long requires 3456 CFM (12 x 24 x 12)
  3. Reference the above table. Select the appropriate combination of fan(s) to achieve the necessary CFM rating. Be sure to match the total CFM output for your exhaust fan(s) to the CFM ratings for your Inlet Shutters.

I've run the fan daily for two weeks. It'a solidly built unit, but fan is slightly out of balance, so it vibrates and the louvre doors frequently won't shut when the unit is turned off. The motor gets very hot.

Simple fans. Pulled it out of the well packed box, put several screws in to mount them, plugged them in and they ran perfectly. They move a lot of air and and are fairly quiet. I have other JD fans, and they are super reliable and run and run and run.

This fan/shutter system delivered what I expected. Nicely built. Packaging offered plenty of protection for shipping. Aluminum shutter works perfectly with variable speed - even with fan on minimum speed. Fan is well balanced and operates at a quiet sound level for a fan that moves 3,000 cfm. Good value for the money.

I was very impressed with this shutter fan when I first received it but now in a greenhouse environment, the motor housing has almost totally rusted and the fan motor keeps overheating and cutting out - I think I would look for something in stainless for a humid environment

overall quality is good. The shutters are a little noisy when the fan is operating, but in my shop, that is not a problem. Item was drop shipped from the manufacturer, the box was a little too flimsy for the weight of the fan. The box was destroyed by the time it arrived. The fans frame was bent in a few places, but was easily straightened. I am overall pleased with my purchase.

This fan came just thrown in a box with no packing material, nothing, hence it was bent out of shape so I had to bend it back. The wire connections were difficult, not just screws to attach wires. The motor because it is so big and heavy and only supported by the cage shakes around so much I couldn't even use this fan. This is more of a problem with the larger fans in this line. The motor is a cheap one, and over all I think J&D makes junk, look elsewhere.

Fan arrived without the cord but one was supplied promptly by the company. I did have to install the slip fittings on the end of the cord. Poor instructions, but really not needed if the fan arrives with a cord attached. Fan runs very smooth and is very quiet, much quieter than my previous fan.

Fan is made of high quality materials and is very smooth and quiet when operating. The fan needs a better system for attaching electrical hard wiring. It does not have a sufficient method of making a moisture proof connection. It should have a threaded connection for conduit applications. Also there should be more room under the access cover to fit wiring connections. The fan needs to come with better installation instructions.

This one is replacing the one I purchased from same manufacturer a couple of years ago that had failed. The new one appears to be far superior to old style. I hope it last a lot longer than old style. I do believe this will be a 5 rating but it way too early for me to give it that henced the 4. The old style would be a 2.

I bought the 12" fan to help cool a newly built 9x16 passive solar greenhouse which was overheating this summer. It is very powerful and not terribly loud, IMO. I have a motorized 24" shutter at floor level on the opposite end for intake, and this fan changes the air completely in less than a minute! Easy to install, I gave it a 4 out of 5 because the shutters have some gaps and will require a cover for the winter. I looked at a LOT of shutter fans before deciding on this J&D unit, as this one moved more air for less amps and dollars. Very satisfied customer!

This exhaust fan and shuttle is built solid and runs exactly as it should. I have it running through a thermostat set to "cool" at 70 degrees and right on que, 70 hits and it turns on. It is very heavy duty, with a solid wire cage around the fan. Blades are metal. And to top it off, the price is perfect. Most competitor fans are double in cost, which pushes these products out of the range of hobbyists. I will definitely buy another when I need to.

This fan is very loud! The air flow is great, the construction quality seems OK. I had to drill the rivets holding the shutter to the fan so I could mount the fan indoors and the shutter outside. This was minor. The indoor fan guard is sturdy and openings small enough to keep fingers out. This is a nice fan but surprisingly loud for such a small size.

these j&d fans are far superior to the others. much more powerful & sturdy. i have 2 of the 20" fans, they move a lot of air. adequate ventilation & air circulation is one of the most important elements to greenhouse growing. the fans have finished their first season of service with no problems & will soon be coming out to be stored for the winter. highly recommended, but make sure you ask for the j&d fans.

I'm a novice and built my first greenhouse from scratch. I used the BTU calculator on the site to determine my ventilation requirements and purchased the VES12 12" shutter fan. It was well packed and came with simple instructions. I installed it in less than an hour and was pleasantly surprised with the volume of air that it can move. It's also fairly quiet. Be careful to make sure that the mounting surface is flat and that you don't over tighten the mounting bolts as I did need to adjust mine a little to get the shutters to drop reliably. I would not hesitate to recommend or buy another.

good fan, the motor is pretty quiet and it can move a lot of air. The only drawback is the gaps on the sides of the shutter allow some air in. If you are not too concerned about your shutters letting in cold air, this is a great product

You don't have to spend hundreds more

I recently purchased a 8x12 greenhouse to store my plants during the winter months. Even though this was the fourth worst winter for the northeast Florida area in recorded times the temperature would reach the high 60's and on occasions the low 70's. This would send the greenhouse temperature to 120 degrees plus. My thermometer maxed out at 120 degrees. My plants were taking a beating, I had to get a greenhouse fan. I used a small pedestal fan but it was always in the way, had to constantly move it to tend to my plants. After shopping for days on the internet I purchased the 16" VES 161 Shutter fan. After it arrived and a quick trip to my local Home Depot for mounting hardware I had it installed in the same day. My wife and I are really pleased with the appearance and quality of this product since it was the lowest priced fan of this type that I found on the internet. Having neighbors close by I was concerned with the noise factor but no problem with noise much to my relief. I'm VERY happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone. You don't have to spend hundreds more or jury rig something, get this fan. You'll be glad you did.

I purchased the 16" exhaust fan with two 16" motorized shutters. I needed these desperately as my greenhouse was at times up to 110 degrees - on sunny days. This set-up came with a dual stage thermostat and I added a variable speed fan control. Delivery was very fast. Works great. One of the best things about the purchase, however, was the ability to discuss my needs with a representative of the company before the purchase and then the follow up service. I had questions about the set up as I was putting it in and received complete, courteous and immediate help - and I was invited to call back if I had any more questions. Really made it feel as if they were interested in me personally.

I bought two of the 16 inch fans to cool my 250 square foot greenhouse. I also bought the single stage thermostat and speed controller from IGC. The system works great. These fans move a lot of air fast. The good news is that they are very energy efficient. My watt meter indicates they can run 12 hours a day all year long for only $50 dollars worth of electricity. Considering the value of the lettuce that will be saved from heat related problems in the greenhouse the fans are a great bargain. No problem wiring them up. I just bought some 14 ga stranded cable sheathed for out door and some weather tight fittings. Great service. Packaging was good. Highly recommend this item.

I purchased a 16" exhaust fan and two intake shutters with shutter motors. Installation was a breeze :). All equipment has operated fantastically in the past month since installation, and works perfectly for our new 160 sf greenhouse. Fan is quiet. The only minor problem I am having is getting one of the shutter motors to stop swinging on activation, which is just tweaking and adjusting. An excellent value for the system.

In my 12'x12' greenhouse, I was having a nightmare venting the air by having both the door and the back panels open. Not only did this passive venting not keep the temperature below 90 degrees on hot days, but it let neighborhood cats inside who decided that perlite looked a lot like kitty litter. The J&D shutter fan is a bit noisy, but it evacuates the air so efficiently that it doesn't run constantly. The International Greenhouse Company provides the setup the proper way, with the intake vents two sizes bigger than the exhaust fan so that the motor doesn't burn out. Highly recommended, it can mean the difference between a bountiful harvest and heat damaged crops.
