  • Revising my first review
When I wrote my first review, I had tried to remove my first group of plants which were lettuces from the cells and met with a great deal of difficulty and mangling of roots. It took a couple of weeks in the ground for the lettuce to recover. However, I would like to give more stars to this product for tomatoes and peppers. With these plants I had no trouble removing them from their cells by pushing one end of a sharpie pen through the bottom hole. Why? I can only surmise that the roots of tomatoes and peppers are much stronger and can hold the soil intact without breaking apart. So with this in mind, for plants with stronger root systems, this product works really well.
  • Sturdy, but hard to remove seedlings
I purchased quite a few of these, and initially I was very pleased. The self-watering function worked really well and the components are very sturdy and will probably last several seasons. The cover is unnecessary for most seeds since the self-watering feature keeps the soil moist. The cover adds unwanted humidity for some seeds like peppers. The capillary mat tears easily and will probably need to be replaced after only a couple of uses. When it came time for planting, the small plants were really difficult to remove without damaging roots, mainly because the plastic cells are rigid and they are square-shaped and are not tapered. It is impossible to remove them with the inverted platforms provided. Instead I used a plastic butter spreader to ease the sides free. I feel that the seed trays could have been designed better to encourage better root development and to remove the plants better.
