Show off your gardening prowess when you fill a vase with spectacular spikes of homegrown delphiniums. Mostly double flowers in shades of purple, blue and white appear in early summer. May bloom again in early fall. An outstanding perennial for borders and backgrounds.
Plant seeds outdoors in late fall or early spring. (Seeds may be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost.) Delphinium prefers well-drained soil enriched with compost. Sow seeds, cover lightly with soil and keep moist until seedlings are established.
Water when the top 1-inch layer of soil is dry. Keep water off leaves. Fertilize monthly. Stake to prevent wind breakage. Cut off main flower spike when it fades to promote second blooming. Protect overwintering plants with a layer of mulch.
