Grow this carnation in borders, planters and rock gardens. Double, fringed flowers in shades of red, pink, yellow and white are spicily fragrant - unsurpassed as cut flowers. Grown as an annual where winters are cold. Blooms 5 months after starting from seed.
For flowers the first year, start seeds indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost, planting 2 seeds per pot or cell. Move seedlings to a cool, bright place to continue growing, then transplant to the garden a week or two before the last frost. Before planting, enrich the soil with compost. Add lime if soil is acidic. Where winters are mild, seeds may be planated outdoors in the fall.
Water when the top 3-inch layer of soil is dry. Fertilize monthly. Remove faded blossoms to prolong flowering. Cut back stems after flowering. Protect overwintering plants with a layer of mulch.
