An Intro to Pesticides: The Basics

An Intro to Pesticides: The Basics

We've all had them in our gardens - from insects to an invasive plant and critters to, well, sometimes you're not even sure. And, unfortunately, sometimes it requires taking more measures to prevent them. That measure can be a pesticide.

Pesticides are chemicals that are used to kill pests. In the garden or greenhouse, these pests can be insects, weeds, or diseases. It is best to use pesticides as your last line of defense and to have a good IPM (Integrated Pest Management) strategy. Prevention is your first line of defense by using physical, mechanical, or cultural strategies. After that comes biological (beneficial insects) and finally, chemicals.

If you reach a point where you need to use pesticides, be sure to follow these basic principles:

  • Understand your pest. If you're going to be using a pesticide, care is the best approach, and if you're not sure what you are dealing with, you may find yourself doing more harm than good.
  • Choose a chemical that is labeled to target that pest and one that is labeled for your application (lawn, flower garden, vegetable garden, etc).
  • Know your state’s laws regarding pesticides. A good starting point can be found here, but in reality most state sites will likely have the best information.
  • Read the label carefully. This includes application and storage. If you do not follow the label, then you are in danger of a) failing to kill/control your pest, and b) endangering yourself and the environment around you.

Our sales team at Greenhouse Megastore are more than happy to help you with any questions you may have about the pesticides we sell. However, it is recommended to reach out to both the manufacturer of the pesticide and your local agricultural extension agent for detailed information. An ag extension agent is a person who is assigned to your county or city by a local state university to advise you on best agricultural practices for your area.
