A low cost alternative to automated watering systems! The Waterbed reservoir and pressure-activated capillary mat system allows your plants to wick water from underneath as they need it. Just fill the reservoir, arrange the plants as you see fit, and then let the Waterbed do the rest!
I work at a research station and bought 4 of these to try. I have had two going for two weeks and they seem to be working very well. We do not want disease contamination from greenhouse to greenhouse or even pot to pot as we work with rust races - so these beds minimize the amount of hand watering. Maybe the ad should say that they are not really recommended for indoor use because of the overflows? I sure wish greenhouse megastore had large Canadian store we could order from.
This is amazing for the price. I use it indoors under grow lights and it does have an overflow hole to be mindful of, which could dump water if overfilled. I find that the plug trays are perfect for this product, ordinarily I spend a lot of time with a spray bottle, but I don't have to any more. The 1020 flats also work but to a lesser extent because I keep all my flats in a 1020 tray. I find that pouring water over the surface of the waterbed then adding the trays is the trick. Otherwise the soil in the flat would not be in contact with the waterbed defeating the purpose of the capillary mat. Also there is an inch or so border on the perimeter where the plants wont get watered. So if you put a plug flat right to the edge of the waterbed a row or two won't get watered, but that is easy enough to overcome once you know it is an issue. After using one for a season I decided to buy a second.
Would have preferred a little thicker, heavier duty. That said, it is excellent. Presently, I am using it for starts that have already germinated, using the Sheet Pots, Hobby Pack. When the starts are getting too tall for the humidity dome I now move them to the waterbed. I am using some microfiber cloth (home depot) between the pots and the mat, to keep the mat clean, while easily transfering the water. I am also using it for some larger pots as well. I will probably get one or two more.
This is my first time growing garden plants from seeds and while I understand how they work, it is nice to see that they actually do! I have started small, using just one tray, about 100 plants on it (half full approx.) and I only need to top off every other day so far, 2 weeks into things. I bought 4 and will use the others later this year. Glad I got them.
I bought four waterbeds last year and they worked so great that I bought two more this year. I live in Florida so it helps me not to have to water everyday when it's hot, I hope one day they will make one with a bigger water reservoir for the hotter part of the country.
the tray is awesome. I do not have to check the water for each and every plant on Them. When the tray water is low I add more.Time saving and good when you go on vacation
Get your ground cover down and stop the weeds before they start again.
